Introduction

Materials sourcing and supply

Throughout the making of this cabin we focussed on supporting our local suppliers where possible. This supports them, their people, and our local community.

Over 80% of the materials budget for this cabin was directed towards suppliers within 50-miles of our workshop.

UK and European timber

All of the timber has been sourced from sustainably managed forests and is either PEFC or FSC certified based in UK or Europe.

Timber framed construction

This cabin is constructed from primarily timber based materials. The frame is treated timber that has a lot longer life span and resists mould, rot and insect infestation. The timber frame is also fully clad all round and protected by a waterproof layer of various materials so will last the lifetime of the cabin.

Some of the timber frame construction timber for this cabin sourced from Fountain Timber in Brockley.

A timber frame building is a natural structure and will shrink and grow with the ambient moisture levels in the air. This is normal. As the new cabin timbers dry out over time some small shift in interior and external cladding materials is likely. This will not compromise the performance of the cabin.

A healthy and sustainable cabin construction

This cabin, like all our designs, is made of multiple layers of timber based materials to create a long lasting and watertight garden room. We have used non-toxic materials throughout the making of this cabin. Toxicity can be through ‘gassing-off’ or toxic run-off from the surface of the materials used. This creates a clean air interior and one that breathes as the humidity rises and falls through the seasons.

The cabin design

This is a timber framed cabin structure that is designed for daily use throughout the seasons. It is well insulated and, due to the layering of the materials, well soundproofed. The cabin has been designed to fit within the existing hard standing area to the side of the house and leaves enough room for maintenance of drainpipes and foul water pipes.

Workshop construction

The cabin was constructed in sections that are then easier to handle and deliver to site.
